Ehud Olmert Is Acting Prime Minister

The Basic Law on the Government states that if the prime minister is temporarily unable to discharge his duties, the deputy prime minister will take his place. According to this constitutional law, the acting prime minister is given all the authorities of the prime minister, in every area and on every subject, so that any necessary decisions can be made. The acting prime minister is authorized to make all prime ministerial decisions, whether urgent or not. (Ha'aretz)


The Year In Grief: Portraits of Israelis Killed in 2005

This past year will be remembered as a peaceful one, the most peaceful in the last five years of the Palestinian rebellion, but that only testifies to how painful this young century has been. For 51 Israeli families touched by terrorism this was a year of shiva and sudden endings, lives lost to bombs in the afternoon at falafel stands and to midnight gunfire on West Bank roads. Hundreds more suffered injury and disability. (New York Jewish Week)

Prime Minister Sharon Fights for Life After Stroke

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was in "serious" condition after suffering a major stroke, the director of Jerusalem's Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital, Shlomo Mor-Yosef. Sharon's powers were transferred to Deputy Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. In Washington, President Bush issued a statement saying he was praying for Sharon's recovery. (CNN)

Fatah Gunmen Kill Two Egyptian Soldiers, Wound 30 on Gaza Border

Two Egyptian border guards were killed and at least 30 wounded when scores of Fatah gunmen opened fire at Egyptian army posts after demolishing parts of the concrete slabs along the border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, enabling many Palestinians to cross into Egypt. Eyewitnesses said the gunmen used a bulldozer and explosives to create a hole in the wall. (Jerusalem Post)


Sharon Asks MASA Participants to Move to Israel

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon met with a group of students visiting Israel as part of the Jewish Agency's "Masa" program. He told the group of 21 Jewish students who had come from 12 different countries, "More than anything, we need you to come and live here in Israel." Sharon also sang Hanukka songs with his guests. (Jerusalem Post)
