Olmert: Syria, Iran Involved in Tel Aviv Suicide Bombing
Interim Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Friday accused the Syrian and Iranian governments of involvement in a suicide bombing that killed nine people in Tel Aviv this week. The Islamic Jihad militant group, which is based in the Syrian capital of Damascus, claimed responsibility for Monday's attack. "The order for the Tel Aviv suicide bombing came from Damascus and when the operation was complete the report went back to Damascus," Olmert told a visiting group of U.S. senators. Israel Warns of New 'Axis of Terror' by Edith Lederer
Israel warned Monday that a new "axis of terror" - Iran, Syria, and the Hamas-run Palestinian government - is sowing the seeds of the first world war of the 21st century. Recent statements by the Palestinian government, Iran and Syria, including one by Hamas on Monday defending the suicide bombing, "are clear declarations of war, and I urge each and every one of you to listen carefully and take them at face value," said Israel's UN Ambassador Dan Gillerman. Penn State Censors Exhibit by Jessica Remitz
For Penn State student Josh Stulman, years of hard work ended in disappointment when the university cancelled his upcoming art exhibit for violation of Penn State's policies on nondiscrimination, harassment, and hate. Three days before his 10-piece exhibit - "Portraits of Terror" - was scheduled to open, Stulman (senior-painting and anthropology) received an e-mail message from the School of Visual Arts that said his exhibit on images of terrorism "did not promote cultural diversity" or "opportunities for democratic dialogue" and the display would be cancelled. The exhibit, Stulman said, which is based mainly on the conflict in Palestinian territories, raises questions concerning the destruction of Jewish religious shrines, anti-Semitic propaganda, and cartoons in Palestinian newspapers. Holocaust Memorial Day: April 25 - Holocaust Museum Sees New Use of "Protocols of Zion"
A century-old forgery used to justify ill-treatment of Jews in Czarist Russia and widely circulated by the Nazis is distributed even today in many languages to stoke hatred of Israel, an exhibit at the Holocaust Museum says. Colorfully bound editions of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion have appeared recently in Mexico and in Japan, where there are few Jews, says exhibit historian Daniel Greene. High school texts in Syria, Lebanon and schools run by the Palestinian authority use the book as history, he says. (AP/Canton Repository)
U.S. Looks to Israel for Anti-Terrorism Ideas by Matthew E. Berger
For years, American law enforcement and security experts have been looking to Israel for the latest in homeland security practices. Now Congress is hoping to work with Israel and other at-risk countries to develop science and technology applications to fight terrorism. Israel advocates are behind new legislation that would create an office within the Department of Homeland Security for counterterrorism cooperation between the United States and its allies. Israel is one of a handful of countries named in the legislation that U.S. officials believe could provide technological assistance. (JTA/Jewish Times)
Terrorist Named to Revamp Palestinian Security by Julie Stahl
A Palestinian terrorist wanted in Israel for his suspected of involvement in the bombing of a U.S. diplomatic convoy has been put in charge of "rehabilitating" some of the Palestinian Authority's security forces. Despite his new position, he won't be exempt from Israeli justice, Israeli sources said on Friday. Jamal Abu Samhadanah, commander of the Popular Resistance Committees, was named as the head of a newly created security force on Thursday. (CNS News) See also Samhadanah: "Jews Are Our Enemy.
