War Now Raging On Two Fronts
by Stewart Ain

Drawn into what now appears to be a two-front war, Israel sent its forces into Lebanon on Wednesday in a major military offensive. The move came after Hizballah terrorists launched a coordinated attack on communities and military positions in northern Israel and captured two soldiers.  Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert called the attack “an act of war” as he launched a large-scale military campaign into Lebanon. The kidnapping came 18 days after an Israeli soldier was captured by terrorists who infiltrated into southern Israel from Gaza, where Israel stepped up its military actions as well. (New York Jewish Week)

Jewish Community Unites in Defense of Israel

A number of U.S. Jewish groups called on the international community to condemn Hizballah's attack on Israel. The American Jewish community is being mobilized to support Israel's right to self-defense, including measures taken to end the more than 1,000 rockets fired from Gaza, the repeated missile and other attacks across the Lebanese border, and all other acts of terror, the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations said in a statement Wednesday. IDF: No Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
by Yaakov Katz

"The situation in Gaza is not even close to developing into a humanitarian crisis," said head of the Gaza Liaison Administration Col. Nir Press. Last week, Israel reopened the Karni crossing into the Gaza Strip. Eighty trucks loaded with medicine and food passed through before it was closed Thursday after Israel received intelligence indicating Palestinians were planning to attack the crossing. Press said the merchandise ordered by the Palestinians included thousands of boxes of cherries. "Judging by what the Palestinians order you can tell that there is not a crisis there," he said. Friends and family members of the two Israeli reserve soldiers kidnapped by Hizballah gathered at their homes last week to show support and solidarity. Authorities have said they have no news regarding the soldiers' fate, but believe they were alive when captured. Regev, a university student who also works for Bezeq, lives with his older brother in the family's home just north of Haifa. Goldwasser, a student at Haifa's Technion, lives with his wife in the Haifa suburb of Nesher.  (Jerusalem Post)

8 Killed in Rocket Attack in Haifa
by Ahiya Raved

Sunday, 10am Israel time: At least ten Katyusha rockets fell on the Haifa area.  Police say eight people have been killed at the train depot and dozens have been injured. Over 700 rockets have been fired since the beginning of fighting on the northern border, and the IDF does not rule out that the rockets may reach further south than Haifa. "Areas south of Haifa will receive an advanced warning in the form of a siren," Home Front Commander Yitzhak Gershon said. (Ynet News)

President Bush: "Hizballah Lay Down Arms"

"In my judgment, the best way to stop the violence is to understand why the violence occurred in the first place. And that's because Hizballah has been launching rocket attacks out of Lebanon into Israel, and because Hizballah captured two Israeli soldiers. That's why we have violence. And the best way to stop the violence is for Hizballah to lay down its arms, and to stop attacking. And, therefore, I call upon Syria to exert influence over Hizballah."  (White House)

Israel Blockades Lebanon in Response to Attack on Northern Border

Responding to Hizballah's attack across the Israeli border last week in which eight Israeli soldiers were killed and two were captured, Israel on Thursday announced a blockade of Lebanon. "Israeli naval vessels have enforced a full naval closure on Lebanon because Lebanon's ports are used to transfer both terrorists and weapons to the terror organizations operating in Lebanon," an Israeli military spokesman said.
