Israel Worried North Korea Will Pass Nuclear Know-How to Iran
by Aluf Benn

Israel is concerned that North Korea will transfer materials and technology for the development of nuclear weapons to Iran, a senior Israeli official said Monday following a nuclear test carried out by North Korea. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will hold a special meeting on dealing with the threat posed by the Iranian nuclear program this week. The meeting was planned several weeks ago, but will now take place in light of the North Korean nuclear test and its implications on the Middle East. According to the official, North Korea had issued a warning last week that it would not hesitate to transfer "technology, materials and nuclear arms" to other countries. (Ha'aretz)

New Calls by Hamas Militants to Target the U.S.
by Tim McGirk

Commanders of the military wing of Hamas, the Islamist movement elected to power in the Palestinian territories earlier this year, are locked in a fierce debate over whether to launch terrorist attacks on U.S. targets in the Middle East. In furtive, underground meetings held in the West Bank and Gaza, a growing number of Hamas commanders say they are running out of patience with the U.S. and want to strike back. (Time)

Mashaal: Hamas Won't Recognize Israel
by Albert Aji

Exiled Hamas political leader Khaled Mashaal said last week at a news conference in Damascus that "Hamas will not surrender...and will not recognize Israel." Mashaal called on Arab governments to "break the siege" over the Palestinians - the cutoff of aid by the U.S., Israel, and much of the West to the Palestinian government unless Hamas renounces violence, recognizes Israel, and accepts past peace agreements. Israel: No Syria Talks Unless It Shuns Militants
by Corinne Heller

Israel said last week it would not negotiate with Syria as long as the country continued to back militant groups, rebuffing remarks by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that he was ready for peace talks. Miri Eisin, a spokeswoman in Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's office, said that for Israel to agree to renew negotiations, Syria would first need to change "simple things - not allowing all the terrorist organizations to have their headquarters openly in Damascus....To not have the foreign minister of Syria say he wishes he could be fighting with Hizballah would be a great step in the right direction."  (Reuters)
